Why drivers in the GTA choose steelies
Steel wheels are strong, affordable and easy to repair. Putting your winter tires on their own set of steel wheels has three advantages:
- Cheaper changeovers. Swapping complete wheels is quicker than remounting tires twice a year.
- Alloy wheels stay safe. Road salt and winter potholes damage expensive alloy wheels.
- Longer tire life. Tires are not stretched on and off the rim every season.
Getting the right fit
A steel wheel has to match your vehicle in four ways: bolt pattern (for example 5×114.3), centre bore, offset and diameter. It also has to clear your brakes. We check all four before we sell a wheel, and we can tell you if your car needs a specific TPMS sensor.
Smaller wheels for winter
Many SUVs and luxury cars come with 19 or 20 inch wheels. A slightly smaller steel wheel, where it clears the brakes, often allows a winter tire with more sidewall that costs less and rides better on rough roads.
