Winter Tires

Winter tires for cars, SUVs and trucks, sold alone or on steel wheels, installed at our North York shop. Open 7 days.

Why winter tires matter in Ontario

Below about 7°C, the rubber in all-season tires starts to harden and loses grip. Winter tires use a softer compound and a tread full of small slits, called sipes, that bite into snow and ice. The result is shorter stopping distances and better control on cold roads, even when they are dry.

What to look for

  • The three-peak mountain and snowflake symbol. It shows the tire passed a standard snow traction test.
  • The right size, load index and speed rating for your vehicle. A lower speed rating is common and accepted on winter tires; ask us if you are unsure.
  • Studded or studless. Most GTA drivers choose studless. Studded tires are allowed in Northern Ontario but restricted in Southern Ontario.

Save money on insurance

Ontario insurers are required to offer a discount to drivers who use winter tires. Ask your insurance company how much it is and what proof it needs. We can give you an invoice showing the tires and installation date.

Winter tires on steel wheels

Buying your winter tires already mounted on steel wheels means each changeover is a simple wheel swap. It costs less each season, it is faster, and it protects your alloy wheels from salt and potholes.

When to put them on and take them off

Install winter tires when daytime temperatures stay at 7°C or below, usually late October to early November in Toronto. Take them off when it stays above 7°C in spring, usually April. Driving winter tires through summer wears them out quickly.

Winter tire questions

Do I need four winter tires or just two?

Always four. Mixing winter and all-season tires makes the car handle unpredictably, especially when braking or turning.

How long do winter tires last?

Usually four to six winters with normal driving, depending on how much you drive and whether they are taken off in spring. Replace them when tread depth reaches about 5/32 of an inch.

Can I store my tires with you?

Ask us when you book. If storage is not available, we can tell you how to store them at home so they last longer.
