Which tire type is right for you?
The right tire depends on how and where you drive. In the GTA, most drivers either run two sets (winter and all-season) or one all-weather set year-round.
- Winter tires: the safest choice from November to April. Soft rubber and deep sipes grip on snow, slush and ice.
- All-season tires: quiet and long-lasting from spring to fall. Not designed for cold Ontario winters.
- All-weather tires: one set for the whole year, with the mountain and snowflake symbol for winter use.
- Summer tires: best grip and steering feel on warm dry and wet roads, for sports and performance cars.
- All-terrain tires: for trucks and SUVs that see gravel, cottage roads or light off-road use.
How to read your tire size
Every tire has a size code on the sidewall, such as 225/65R17. The first number is the width in millimetres, the second is the sidewall height as a percentage of the width, and the R number is the wheel diameter in inches. You will also see a load index and speed rating, such as 102H. Replacement tires should match or exceed both.
